Brian Carlson, age 52, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Friday, September 8, 2023, at his home.
Brian Scott Carlson was born on September 21, 1970, in Park Ridge, Illinois. He was the third of four sons born to Richard Carlson and Jane (Garza) Carlson. Brian graduated from Wheeling High School with the class of 1989. Brian was a lifelong Cubs fan and at a young age he worked at Wrigley Field selling hot dogs. He lived in Virginia for a number of years before moving to Chanute, Kansas, where he met his wife, Denise. On July 21, 2014 Brian and Denise Holmes were married in Garnett, Kansas. They made their home in Garnett, where Brian worked at the Pizza Hut in Iola.
Conversations with Brian revolved around three topics, sports, weather and politics. His love for his beloved Cubs, Bears and Blackhawks never wavered. The Cubs winning the World Series in 2016 was one of the highlights of his fandom. Brian could most often be found following sports on Twitter or rewatching previous games online. He loved his Pug dogs, Milo and Piper, and his current dog, Bubbles. Brian also enjoyed NASCAR races, and he was a huge Jeff Gordon fan. He continued to follow the series after Jeff Gordon retired but his loyalty remained with whoever was driving the #24 car.
Brian is survived by his wife, Denise Carlson, of the home; his two sons, Alexander Sabantini of Chicago, Illinois, Daniel Carlson of Henry, Virginia; his daughter, Rachel Carlson of Garnett; five grandchildren, Brooklyn, Chevy, Myah, Harper and Hannah; his stepson, Lathan Woodson of Garnett; his mother, Jane Phelan of Jacksonville, Florida; and three brothers, Jeffrey Carlson of West Palm Beach, Florida, Andrew Carlson and wife, Julie of Jacksonville, Florida, and Timothy Phelan of Arlington, Texas.
He was preceded in death by his father, Richard Carlson, and his step-father, Richard Phelan.
In true Brian fashion everyone attending the services are encouraged to wear their favorite team's gear, but extra credit will be given if you wear Cubs or Bears gear.
