Alan "A.J." C. Johnson, 64, of Gas, Kansas, died Tuesday, June 7, 2011, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola, Kansas. A.J. was born May 14, 1947, at Denver, Colorado, the son of Curtis and Shirley (Kloberdanz) Johnson. He grew up in Denver where he graduated from East High School in 1965 and Colorado State University in 1969. That same year he began a 40 year career with Gates Rubber Company. He retired from Gates as a Project Development Engineer in 2009. He had been a dedicated employee with 36 years of perfect job attendance until he was diagnosed with cancer. Alan was issued a patent in 2010 with Gates Rubber Company. In 1969, Alan married Barbara Gillingham and they had three children and later divorced. On June 29, 1998, he married Judy Utley in Miami, Oklahoma. They have made their home in Gas since 2005. A.J. enjoyed traveling, especially along Route 66. He loved the American Southwest and enjoyed hiking and motorcycling in the mountains with friends. He had an avid interest in classic autos which he owned and enjoyed throughout the years. A.J. was a member of the Colorado State Alumni Association. He was a very kind, dedicated and loyal person. All who knew him loved him and he had no enemies.
