Alice C. Valentine, 98, of Garnett, died peacefully Thursday, July 9, 2020, at the home of her daughter, Shirley Valentine-Wynes, and son-in-law, Larry Wynes, in Lawrence, Kansas, with family surrounding her.
Alice was born January 21, 1922, in Ottawa, Kansas, the daughter of Paul C. and Lucy E. (Hazen) Pritchard. She graduated from Ottawa High School and worked for her father in his flower nursery.
In the early 1940’s, she met a handsome young man from Richmond, Kansas on a blind date. They talked about their birthdays and he said they would need to get together and they did! Bill went to WWII and when he got out, Alice joined him in California.
They secretly got married on July 23, 1946 and kept it a secret for six weeks while he took a vacation with his parents to California, a vacation that was previously planned.
They were blessed (although sometimes they were not sure they were blessings) with two children, Shirley K. and Bill Jr.
During her life, Alice worked at Southwestern Bell and Dairy Queen. She and Bill also drove school busses for many years to Harris and Garnett.
Alice’s greatest love was her family. Times with family were her greatest pleasures!
On April 27, 1997, their son was killed in an accident. Her husband, Bill, died in 2004. Also preceding her in death were her parents, sister, brother, son-in-law, daughter-in-law, a grandchild and a great grandchild.
Alice moved to Parkside Place in 2005, where she loved to play poker. She learned about the poker games from a member of a church group! She swore it wasn’t gambling but couldn’t deny she won money. At least she never got arrested! She also loved Dominoes, Bingo and Pitch.
Alice is survived by so many loved ones, some family by blood, some family by love! Those included are Ruth, Jim, Phil, Shirley and Larry, Sandy and Bud, Marlene, Cathy, Christina, Mandy, Jeff and Veralene, Curtis, Cody, Alex, Trei, Kailee, Lauren, Jalen, Zain, Aleena, Samantha, Nicole, Shelby, Kassy, three great great grandchildren and two step-great grandchildren! She had lots of people to love and she loved each one so much!
Graveside services will be held at 2:00 p.m., on Monday, July 13, 2020, at the Garnett Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Alice Valentine Memorial Fund.
Thanks to all who showed her love for so many years!
