Anita Baker

August 23, 1930 — May 29, 2024

Anita Yvonne (Scott) Baker passed away May 29, 2024, at Yates Center Nursing Home in Yates Center, Kansas.

Anita was born on August 23, 1930, in Iola, Kansas. Anita attended school in Iola and graduated from Iola High School in 1948. Anita went to Allen County Junior College for 1 year. She worked as a secretary for Cox Grain for 2 years and for the City of Iola for 3 years, and as a farmer's wife until she entered the nursing home.

Anita met Joe Baker while in 4-H and they dated throughout their school years, and were married on December 20, 1950. Anita moved with Joe to the Army Bases at Camp Carson, Colorado and Sparta, Wisconsin. Anita moved back to Iola while Joe was transferred to Ansbach, Germany.

Anita loved to sew and make clothes and blankets for her children. Anita also loved gardening and had an orchard of fruit trees; she canned many cans of fruits and vegetables and was very proud of that. She would make all of the kids leave the house when she had that old pressure-cooker fired up, for fear it might explode. Anita enjoyed hosting family and friends at her house and at pond-parties.

Later in life Anita and Joe started a dog breeding business and raised hundreds of puppies that made so many people happy. Anita and Joe would travel all over the extended area delivering puppies. Anita's most cherished treasures were her children and grandchildren, and to pass on her Christian Faith. She made sure we started getting ready for Sunday church on Saturday with shining shoes and laying out our dress clothes. Sunday school and church were routine every Sunday, plus when Billy Graham was on TV, she insisted we all gather to watch.

In November of 2021 Anita and Joe were admitted to the Yates Center Nursing Home. They have a lot of good care takers there that loved them both and took very good care of them.

Anita was preceded in death by her husband Joe Baker; infant daughter, Joni Kay Baker; and granddaughter, Kristy Ammons; her parents, Russell and Opal Scott; in-laws, Lonnie and Blanche Baker; brothers, Richard Scott and Bob Scott; sister, Wanda Nordt; brother-in-law, Gary Nordt; sister-in-law, Athriana Scott; brother-in-law, Carrol Baker; and sister-in-law, Rita Baker.

Anita taught Bible School and was a member of the Lutheran Ladies Guild, and a member of St. Peter's Lutheran Church of Humboldt, Kansas. Anita is survived by sons, daughters, and their spouses, Roger and Jan Baker, Scott and Greta Baker, Tim and Judy Baker, John and Linda Baker, Sherry and Ron Herder, Terry and Mike Taylor; sister-in-law Verla Scott; 34 grandchildren; 45 great-grandchildren; and 9 great-great grandchildren.
