Ann Calahan, age 90, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, September 23, 2014, at Richmond Healthcare in Richmond, Kansas. She was born on April 4, 1924 at Mont Ida, Kansas, the daughter of Dallas Swarthout and Blanch Sarah (Hudson) Swarthout. She attended elementary school at Mont Ida, and graduated from Garnett High School in 1942. Ann attended Emporia State Teacher's College, and later received her Master's Degree in Counseling. Ann was united in marriage to Kenneth Calahan on May 1, 1944 in California while Kenneth was serving in the Air Force during World War 2. She was a schoolteacher, counselor, and worked as a social worker at the hospital. She also owned and prepared taxes at H&R Block for several years. In addition to her work she was involved in the community in a variety of ways. She was an active member of many local organizations and served on the Anderson County Hospital Board of Directors and as an Anderson County Commissioner. Ann was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth Calahan in 1985; and an infant daughter. She is survived by her daughters, Phyllis Smith and husband Ronnie of Topeka, Kansas; Patty Barr and husband Dean of Garnett, Kansas; Donna Davis and husband Craig of Hutchinson, Kansas; Debby Burton and husband Trey of Topeka, Kansas; one brother, Colburn Swarthout of Cloverdale, California; ten grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM on Saturday, September 27, 2014, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery.
