Arvid Ralph Edes, age 75, of Williamsburg, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, December 15, 2011, at Sunset Manor Nursing Home, Waverly, Kansas. He was born September 23, 1936, in Bertha, Minnesota, the son of William and Alta (Beman) Edes. As a boy, he grew up on a farm and he remembers doing chores a lot with his dad, especially milking the cows day and night. During his school days, he went to a one room school house where the 1st graders sat on one side and the 7th and 8th graders sat on the other side. Arvid attended Bertha, Minnesota school and in 1952, he graduated from Two Harbors High School. As a young man, he enjoyed going to the movies on Saturday nights and playing ball on Sundays with his dad. He worked on remodeling homes with his dad before joining the Air National Guard for 22 years until retiring in July 1978. Arvid married Margaret Stevens on April 7, 1973 in East St. Louis, Illinois. In 1979, they started doing foster care and fostered 10 children. In 1990, Arvid was diagnosed with MS and went on disability in 1993. He enjoyed puzzles, hunting, fishing, and loved animals. He was preceded in death by his parents, William and Alta Edes; son, Raymond Edes; one brother, David Edes. Arvid is survived by his wife, Margaret Edes of the home; one son, Jeff Edes of Portland, Oregon; one daughter, June Balcom of O'Fallon, Missouri; one sister, Loretta Rorvig of Fredericksburg, Virginia; and two grandchildren, Shawn Edes and Justin Balcom. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Tuesday, December 20, 2011 at Trinity Lutheran Church, Garnett. Cremation is planned. The family will be present to greet friends on Monday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to the Trinity Lutheran Church.
