Berniece Joy Stanley, age 96, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2016, at Olathe Medical Center, Olathe, Kansas. She was born November 27, 1919, at Richmond, Kansas, the daughter of Oren R. and Carrie Goldie (Lacy) Brown. Joy graduated with the Class of 1936 from Garnett High School. Joy married Irwin W. Benefiel on November 27, 1937, this union was blessed with three daughters. They initially made their home in Garnett, before moving to Kansas City. They later moved to Kincaid, Kansas where they owned and operated Joy & Bennies Café from 1948 to 1951. After moving back to Garnett, Joy worked at the A&P Tea Co. for 23 years until retiring in 1975. Irwin preceded her in death on December 9, 1953. She then married Glenn C. Stanley on July 13, 1974. They made their home in Garnett, where Joy lived out the rest of her years. In her retirement years, she played the piano and organ for three nursing homes in Garnett. Joy enjoyed good music, traveling, dancing, and playing cards. She especially enjoyed cards with the Monday and Thursday night pitch players, along with the Wednesday morning cruisers. Her greatest joy was her children, family and extended families and she was proud of all of them. She was preceded in death by her parents, Oren and Carrie Brown; four brothers, Allen Brown, Chester Brown, Dean Brown, and Irwin Delmar (Doc) Brown; one sister, Goldie Elizabeth Hunt; and two sons-in-law, Dean Powell and Tom Martin. Joy is survived by her husband, Glenn Stanley, of Garnett; three daughters, Joyce Hastert and husband Dennis of Greeley, Kansas; Gayle Larsen and husband Don of Seattle, Washington; Betty Martin of Topeka, Kansas; son, Wayne Stanley and wife Glenda of Garnett, Kansas; fourteen grandchildren; several great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, August 22, 2016 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett, Kansas. The family will greet friends from 9:30 – 10:30 AM, prior to the service at the funeral home. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery, Garnett, Kansas.
