Bertha Staadt, age 79, of Welda, Kansas, passed away on Wednesday, October 2, 2013 at North Point Nursing Home in Paola, Kansas. She was born on November 16, 1933, in Burns, Kansas, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Beck. She graduated high school and received her nursing certificate in El Dorado, Kansas. Bertha met Jack Spangler when he was in the United States Navy and married him in 1952. This union was blessed with two children, Jack and Connie. She worked as a nurse in the El Dorado and Marion, Kansas areas and in 1964 they moved from Kansas to Colorado. Bertha worked at Parkview Hospital in Pueblo, Colorado until 1973. In 1973, she returned to Burns, Kansas to help care for her older sister. Bertha married Robert Staadt in 1974. They made their home in Manhattan, Kansas while Bertha worked at the Ft. Riley Military Hospital. Bertha and Bob owned and operated the B & B Mobile Storage business. Upon deciding to retire, they moved to Welda to be close to his family home. Bertha retired after 45 years of nursing. The love of her life was nursing, especially infants and pediatrics. She was known as "the little baby nurse". Bertha's hobby was genealogy and she wrote for the Welda community newspaper for many years. She had a love for her family and extended family. The community of Welda grew to know her and she included many people in her extended family. Bertha was preceded in death by her parents; her son, Jack Spangler; and sister, Marie Crigear. She is survived by her husband, Robert Staadt of the home; daughter, Connie Ryan and Randall of Pueblo, Colorado; three grandchildren, Jacob Spangler, Jillian Spangler, and Robyn Calloway-Florezak and husband Rob. Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a.m., on Saturday, October 5, 2013, at the Welda Methodist Church in Welda, Kansas. The family will greet friends at 10:00 a.m. prior to the service at the church in Welda, with burial in the Welda Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the Welda Methodist Church.
