Bessie Mae Mathews, age 79, of Moran, Kansas, passed away May 1, 2018, at the Moran Manor, Moran. Bessie was born April 30, 1939, in Mapleton, Kansas, to John C. Lucas and Bertha M. Brown Lucas. Bessie graduated Bronson High School in 1957. She and Frank L. Mathews, Jr. were married on May 4, 1957, in Fort Scott, Kansas. Bessie was known for her love of horses, gardening, flowers, bird and animal watching, and her love for her family. She was known to have a quick wit, sassy, and was tough as nails. Bessie is fondly remembered for always being there for her family, especially for her grandchildren. Bessie worked for Western Insurance in Ft. Scott and then for Haldex Brakes in Iola for ten years, retiring early to spend more time with family and friends. Bessie is survived by her son, Daryl Mathews and wife, Peggy, Bronson; her three grandsons, Derrick Mathews and wife Lysa, Bronson; Devon Mathews and wife, Kallie, Mapleton; Denton Mathews and his fiancé, Amber, Bronson; one sister, Betty M. Bradbury and husband, Gerald Sr., Redfield; seven great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bessie was preceded in death by her husband and her parents. A funeral service honoring Bessie's life will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 5, 2018, at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Moran, Kansas, with burial following in the Moran Cemetery.
