Betty Jean Johnson Meadows, 88, of Iola, Kansas, died Sunday, September 27, 2015, at St. Francis - Via Christi Hospital in Wichita, Kansas. Betty was born January 14, 1927, on a farm near Climax, Kansas, the youngest child of Lowell B. and Alma ( Nitsche ) Grundy. She attended schools in Elk and Greenwood Counties, graduating from Climax High School in 1943. On August 20, 1943, she married Dwight W. Johnson. Since he was employed by the Santa Fe Railroad, they made their home in various towns in southeast Kansas. They spent 12 years in Virgil, 17 years in Eureka, and 22 years in LaHarpe. Dwight preceded her in death on January 2, 1997. Betty married E. Dwayne Meadows on October 1, 1999, and they made their home in Sedan, Kansas, for 7 years before moving to Iola. He preceded her in death on December 21, 2011. Betty worked as a secretary for several financial institutions and insurance companies before retiring. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, and camping. In later years she learned to golf. Since the age of 10, she has been a member of the Methodist Church in the community in which she lived. She was active in the United Methodist Women, camping clubs, garden clubs, and the Red Hat Society. SURVIVORS: 1 son: Robert Johnson of Lake Lotawana, Missouri 1 brother: Eugene Grundy of Kansas 1 sister: Phyllis Broddie of DeSoto, Kansas 3 grandchildren: Shannon Johnson of Drexel, Missouri, Kimberly Battin and husband James of Cleveland, Missouri, and Heather Carter and husband Lee of Decatur, Alabama 6 great grandchildren She was preceded in death by her parents, an infant daughter, Linda Sue Johnson, 6 brothers, and 2 great grandchildren Cremation has taken place. MEMORIAL SERVICES: 2:00 p.m. Friday, October 2, 2015, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola with inurnment at a later date in the Eureka Cemetery. MEMORIALS: Memorial fund checks should be made to the Betty Meadows Memorial Fund. The money will be used for maintenance of the old Climax school house.
