Betty Tilton, age 97, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Friday, November 8, 2019, at Parkview Heights Living Center in Garnett.
Alice Betty Caldwell was born on February 6, 1922 at Garnett. She was the third of four children born to Gilmon Clinton and Ella Catherine (Gray) Caldwell. Betty was a lifelong resident of Garnett. On November 10, 1939, Betty was united in marriage to Ralph L. Tilton, in Iola, Kansas. Their union was blessed with one daughter, Carol Ann. Betty worked part-time at the Gambles Store in Garnett. She later owned and operated Dee’s Fashions on the square in Garnett in the late 1970s. Betty’s most meaningful work began when she earned the title of “Granny”. She was a grandmother for 57 of her 97 years. In those 57 years she shared many lifetimes of love with her family and countless others, to the point that Betty and Granny became synonymous. In her final years spent at Golden Heights (Parkview Heights) she made many connections with the residents and staff. She will be missed for her cooking and baking, her ornery spirit and finger shaking, but especially that twinkle in her eye when her loved ones arrived. Betty was a member of the Garnett First United Methodist Church, the UMW and the Garnett VFW Auxiliary.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband of 70 years, Ralph Tilton, on December 22, 2009; two sisters, Marie Allen and Mary Wharton; one brother, Glenn Caldwell; and one great-great-grandson, Kason Davis.
Betty is survived by her daughter, Carol Ann Feuerborn, of Garnett; four grandchildren, Deanna Wolken and husband, Tom of Garnett, Debbie Davis and husband, Doug of Garnett, Dana Spencer and husband, Michael of Colony and Reuben Feuerborn and wife, Moria of Garnett; eleven great-grandchildren, Emily DeVall, and husband, Brandon, Katelyn Schroeder and husband, Mitch, Derek Davis and wife, Jordan, Brandon Davis and Carly Johnson, Cody Davis and wife, Lacie, Benjamin Spencer and wife, Sydney, Nicholas and Madeline Spencer, and Payton, Alexis and Tyler Feuerborn; eight great-great-grandchildren, Jersey and Berkey DeVall, Bristol and Copelan Davis, Cayden, Rylie and Laramie Davis, and Bowe Davis.
Funeral services will be held at 10:30 AM, Monday, November 11, 2019, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. Betty’s family will greet friends from 4:00 to 6:00 PM, Sunday afternoon at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Parkview Heights or Garnett First United Methodist Church.
