Betty Jo (Riley) Young, 72, of Harris, Kansas passed away Sunday, September 16, 2012 at the Shawnee Mission Medical Center following a brief illness. Betty was born February 2, 1940 at Harris, Kansas, the daughter of Johnnie and Lillie (Horst) Riley. Betty attended the Maple Grove School near Westphalia before graduating from Westphalia High School. Following school Betty moved to Topeka, where she worked at Hallmark Cards for five years. On October 28, 1962 Betty married Gene O. Young at the First United Methodist Church, Garnett. This union was blessed with five children. They made their home near Harris and Betty worked at the Garnett Sewing Factory, Oak Haven Nursing Home and at the Richmond Care Facility. In her retirement Betty enjoyed reading, tending to her garden and flowers and attending the local Tuesday auction. She also enjoyed visiting the local Thrift Store and any garage sale within driving distance. Betty's love for her family and grandkids will be dearly missed. She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Ranae Young on June 2, 1997, granddaughter, Miranda Young, and one sister, Donna Arbuckle, and an infant sister, Lillie Joann Riley. Betty is survived by her husband of nearly 50 years, Gene of the home; her children: Rhonda Zornes and husband, James, of Americus, Joe Young and wife, Jennifer, of Westphalia, Kansas, Bud Young and wife, Jennifer, of Clay Center, Kansas, and Rita Young of Overland Park, Kansas; grandchildren: Carrie Jo and Katelyn Zornes, Guy, Riley and Huck Young, and Tyler, Olivia and Hannah Young; one sister, Martha Henry of Ottawa, Kansas; three brothers: Gerald Riley and wife, Beverly of Linwood, Kansas, Larry Riley, and Gary Riley and wife, Lynn, all of Iola, Kansas; and numerous nieces, nephews and other extended family. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, September 20, 2012 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett. Burial will follow in the Cherry Mound Cemetery, rural Westphalia, Kansas. Following the burial family and friends are invited to a luncheon at the Harris Fire Department Town Hall. The family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday evening at the funeral home.
