Bill L. Kersley, age 81, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, January 13, 2011 at North Point Skilled Nursing Center in Paola, Kansas. He was born on September 6, 1929, at Selma, Kansas, the son of Herbert and Jessie (Anglin) Kersley. Bill graduated from Kincaid High School. He served in the U.S. Army. Bill was united in marriage to Nyda Stroup; this union was blessed with one daughter. Nyda preceded him in death in 1999. Bill lived in the Kansas City area for most of his working life. He worked for the Kansas City Police Department in the 1960's. Bill was a truck driver for Union Carbide/Praxair, receiving the Million Mile Safety Award. He retired in 1996, moving to Garnett in 1998. Bill was a member of the VFW in Garnett. He enjoyed fishing, gardening, collecting coins and die cast models, but his greatest joy came from visiting with friends and relatives. He was preceded in death by his parents; and his sister Pat Johnson in 1988. Bill is survived by his daughter, V. Kay Kersley of Kansas City, Missouri; two stepsons, John Lightner and wife Sandy of Palm Coast, Florida; Gavin Lightner and wife Jean of Las Vegas, Nevada; three step-grandchildren, Justin, Kyle and Anna Lightner; one brother-in-law and a niece and a nephew. The family will greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 20, 2011 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Private family inurnment will be held at the Kincaid Cemetery. In lieu of flowers the family suggests, memorial contributions to V.F.W. for Troop Support and sent in care of the funeral home.
