Boward Basil Flynn, 88, of Moran, Kansas, died Monday, December 1, 2008, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. Boward was born Oct. 27, 1920, at Drumright, Oklahoma, to Bert Bryan and Eva Belle (Brown) Flynn. He grew up in the Drumright area before the family moved to Bronson, KS, in 1937. Boward married Arlene Hopkins on Dec. 24, 1941, at her parent's home northwest of Moran, Kansas. They made their home on the farm. Boward served in the U.S. Army during WWII from Aug. 1942 until Oct. 1945. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to the farm. He worked as a mechanic for Barnes and Weast John Deere Implement dealership in Moran and for Lowell James International Harvester dealership in Moran before farming full time in 1951. Boward enjoyed raising cattle, welding lawn ornaments and working in his machine shop. His memberships include the Mildred Methodist Church, Moran American Legion and LaHarpe Veterans of Foreign Wars. Survivors include his wife of almost 67 years, Arlene Flynn of the home; 1 son, Thurman Flynn & wife, Onetta of Gas, KS; 1 Daughter, Twyla Norman & husband, Harley of Gas, KS; 8 Grandchildren, Monica Smart & husband, Larry of Frankfort, KS, Michelle Butler & husband, Joe of Louisiana, Justin Flynn & wife, Larissa, Derek Flynn & wife, Kim, and Dana Davis & husband, Rob, all of Des Moines, IA, Shaun and Darrell Chester, and Darren Northcutt & wife, Andrea of Iola, KS; 22 Great Grandchildren; 2 Brothers, Dale Flynn of Wellsville, KS, and Bert Flynn of Kansas City, MO; 3 Sisters, Ellen Paschal of Muskogee, OK, Laura Baker & husband, Gene of Osawatomie, KS, and Judy Baker & husband, Charles of Iola, KS. He was preceded in death by a grandson, Jerrett Flynn and by an infant brother and infant sister. Visitation will be 6:00-8:00 p.m., Wed., Dec. 3, 2008, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Dec. 4, 2008, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. The Rev. Jason Pickering will officiate. Burial will follow with military honors at the Moran Cemetery. Memorials are suggested to the Moran American Legion Scholarship Fund and may be left at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
