C. Opal Hayes, age 107, of Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, March 16, 2010, at Windsor Place Nursing Center in Iola. Opal was born January 19, 1903, on Peck Hill west of Iola, the daughter of Charles and Eleanor (Beahm) Peck. On March 26, 1924, Opal married Raymond F. Hayes and they made their home on a farm west of Iola. In September of 1927, they moved into Iola. In 1940, they moved to Chanute where she worked in a drug store. They lived there 17 years before moving to Topeka where she also worked in a drug store. After they retired, they returned to Iola to make their home. Her husband preceded her in death on December 15, 1989. She was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola. SURVIVORS: 1 Son: Robert L. Hayes of Clackamas, Oregon A number of grandchildren and nieces and nephews She was preceded in death by a daughter, Lorene Henderson, 7 brothers, Elmer, Perry, Ray, Dewey, Ira, Alden and Maynard Peck, and by 3 sisters, Bertha, Iva and Grace. Cremation has taken place. GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 11:30 a.m., Monday, May 31, 2010 at Highland Cemetery in Iola. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate.
