Carl E. Payne age, 79, of Colony, Kansas passed away, Thursday, June 30, 2011 at the Dwight D. Eisenhower VA Medical Center, Leavenworth, Kansas. Carl was born, April 23, 1932 at LaHarpe, Kansas the son of, George Albert and Hazel (Colgin) Payne. He grew up in LaHarpe until his family moved to the Colony area when he was around 11 years old. He attended the Star country school near Colony. Following school he worked in the local oil fields. On July 14, 1952 Carl married Shirley McGhee at Iola, Kansas. In 1953 Carl entered the Army; he served in Italy with the Corps of Engineers until his discharge in 1954. Carl returned to Colony where he worked in the oil fields until going to work at the grain elevator in Colony for 15 years. Carl then worked as a maintenance man at AmPro in LeRoy until his retirement. He enjoyed working in his garden, hunting and fishing and telling stories about hunting and fishing, but his greatest joy came from his grandchildren and great-grandchildren. Carl was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, George Payne Jr. He is survived by his wife, Shirley of the home; one son, Steven Payne and wife, Debbie of Alsea, Oregon; two daughters, Sharon Layne and husband, Ron Poffenbarger, of Iola, Kansas, and Annette Crawford of Colony; 8 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Alberta Crone of Pawnee Rock, Kansas and Madge Leatherman of Chanute, Kansas; four brothers, Homer Payne and wife, Marilyn, of Iola, Robert Payne and wife, Rosella, of LaHarpe, Floyd Payne of Pittsburg, Kansas, and Harold Payne and wife, Patsy, of Colony, Kansas. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 AM, Thursday, July 7, 2011 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Colony. Burial will follow in the Colony Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00-8:00 PM, Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Colony First Responders and sent in care of the funeral home.
