Carol Solomon

Carol E. Solomon entered into eternal life Saturday, January 4, 2014, as family members sang to her hymns of the faith of that hope. Carol died at Diversicare of Chanute where she had been a resident for five years. Carol Emily Shike was born February 6, 1924, in Vassar, Kansas to John W. and Kathryn (Mitchell) Shike. She grew up in Osborne, Kansas before moving to Humboldt for her last year of high school. Carol had been the last remaining member of her family, being preceded in death by her elder sister Marian and her brothers George, Vivian (her twin), and Howard. Carol attended Emporia State Teacher's College for her teaching certificate and taught one year in a country school before working at Beech Aircraft in Wichita during World War II. She married Virgil H. Solomon at the Humboldt Evangelical Church on September 16, 1945, after his return from that war. They farmed west of Humboldt before retiring to Chanute in 1976. Virgil preceded her in death in October, 2012. Carol was the mother of four children: Karen (Gary) Smith of Wichita; Ron, rural Yates Center; Juanell (Bob) Garrett, rural LaHarpe; and Faith (Andrew) Shimko of Wichita. Daughter Karen preceded her in death in 2007. Carol is survived by 15 grandchildren with fond memories of times spent at Grandma and Grandpa's with their cousins in the little house on South Kansas and visits to the pantry to check out what was available. Carol also had 22 great-grandchidren. Carol loved birds, flowers and plants, and music. In her younger years she played the violin. Even in her last years she attempted to play the piano although failing eyesight made it difficult. Carol was a member of the Chanute Church of the Nazarene where services will be held on Saturday, January 11 at 10 a.m. with burial to follow at Mt. Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. The family will welcome visitors at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola from 6-8 p.m. Friday the 10th. Memorials may be given to Milk & Honey Ministries for the Daghfals and Fords, Carol's two granddaughters serving as missionaries in the Mid- and Far East.
