Carolyn Sue Whitaker, Age 74, of Humboldt, Kansas, passed away peacefully in her sleep, Friday, August 11, 2023.
Carolyn "Susie" was born on November 28, 1948, in Caney, Kansas. She was the youngest of 4 with 2 brothers and 1 sister. She graduated from Tech High School in Des Moines, Iowa, in 1966. Carolyn was the mother of 2 rambunctious boys and was a wondering soul who crisscrossed the U.S for better opportunities for herself and children. She settled in Des Moines, Iowa, for a time before continuing her exploration of U.S. and family history. Carolyn returned to Humboldt, Kansas, near where she grew up.
Carolyn was an avid Civil War history buff and historian. She wrote many articles on the subject as well as researched the history behind it and how it affected the local area where she lived. She also participated in numerous reenactments. She also did extensive genealogical work on her lineage back to the 15th century as well as locating and cleaning many a grave stone for lost relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and her two brothers.
Carolyn is survived by her two sons, two daughters-in-law, four grandchildren, two grandson's-in-law, two great-grandchildren; Her beloved sister and many nieces and nephews.
Carolyn will be laid to rest at the Iola cemetery. She did not wish to have a service but you may make a donation in her honor to the Humboldt Historical Museum, 416 N 2nd St, Humboldt, Kansas, 66748.
