Charles "Chuck" Miller, age 77, of Greeley, Kansas passed away Saturday, September 14, 2013 at the Kansas City Hospice House. Chuck was born on May 2, 1936 to George D. and Ellen L. (Nolan) Miller at their farm home east of Greeley, Kansas. He attended St. John School, Greeley, graduating from 8th grade in 1950 and from Greeley High School with the Class of 1954. He played basketball at Greeley High and was Homecoming King in 1954. On June 14, 1958, Chuck married Carol Kay Root, daughter of Walter and Hallie Root, at St. John Church, Greeley. Chuck and Carol began their married life in Kansas City, Kansas, moving to Greeley in 1968. Chuck and Carol were blessed with six wonderful children: Ellen, Mike, Theresa, Deb, Mark, and Diane "Dink". Chuck worked construction jobs in the Kansas City area after high school until he took over the Greeley Hardware in 1968. Several years later he returned to construction jobs with BEHM, Allied Signal and U.S. Engineers until retirement in 1998. For many years he partnered with his nephew, George E. Miller in a cattle operation on a farm they owned east of Greeley. Chuck was a dedicated member of St. John's Catholic Church. After retirement, he was always very busy helping with maintenance of St. John Parish properties. He joined the Greeley Knights of Columbus Council #1901 in 1955 and served as Treasurer from 1992 to 2009, as well as supporting the many activities of the Knights. Chuck's garden of necessity grew into a love that he continued throughout his life. Chuck enjoyed all kinds of family activities, especially their biennial family vacation, hunting, fishing, TV sports and particularly University of Nebraska Softball, where his daughter, Diane, is assistant coach. Chuck was preceded in death by his parents; Carol's parents; two nephews Tim and Stephen Miller and numerous family members. Chuck is survived by his wife, Carol; children, Ellen; Mike and his wife, Cathy and daughter, Maggie; Theresa; Debbie, her husband, Matthew Day and daughter, Kaitlyn; Mark and his wife, Amy and their children, Amanda, Noah and Zach; Diane; brother, George J. and wife Rosemary, sisters, Mary Ellen, Marcella Miller and Patricia Feuerborn, sister-in-law, Dorothy Lickteig, special nephew, George E. and wife Cheryl and numerous Miller, Feuerborn, Nolan, and Lickteig nephews and nieces. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 11:00 AM, Tuesday, September 17, 2013 at St. John's Catholic Church, Greeley. Burial will follow in the St. John's Cemetery. The family will greet friends following a Rosary at 7:00 PM, Monday evening at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the St. John's Building Maintenance Fund.
