Chester L. "Chet" Bishop, 89, of Iola, Kansas, died Thursday, January 15, 2015, at Windsor Place in Iola. Chet was born January 25, 1925, at East Sylamore, Arkansas, the first of eleven children born to Charles and Jessie (Caler) Bishop. He grew up at Athens between Piqua and Yates Center. Chet served in the U.S. Army from 1943 to 1946 during WWII. He fought in the Battles of Normandy, Northern France, Rhineland and Central Europe. On May 15, 1946, Chet married Doris J. Stephens in Iola. They made their home in Idaho until 1950 when they moved back to Kansas. He worked for LeHigh Portland Cement Company, Lang Motors and retired from Gates Rubber Company. He was a member of Iola Baptist Temple and Iola American Legion. SURVIVORS: His wife of 68 years: Doris Bishop of the home 3 Children: Stephen Bishop & wife, Rita of Independence, KS, Susie Call & husband, Terry of Iola and Judy Slife & husband, Kenneth of Iola 4 Siblings: Russell Bishop and David Bishop, both of Yates Center, Velary Iden of Iola and Shirley Martinez of Goddard 6 Grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by 6 siblings, Alvin Bishop, Ernest Bishop, Leora Bishop, Darlene West, Colletta Williams and Sarai Bishop.
