Clara A. Powell

Clara A. Powell, age 97, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, March 13, 2008, at Golden Heights Living Center in Garnett, Kansas. She was born on October 8, 1910, in Richmond, Kansas, the daughter of Valentine and Johanna (Hastert) Bures. Clara married Tony Sobba on October 14, 1930, at St. Boniface Catholic Church in Scipio, Kansas. Tony died on November 7, 1973. She later married Eugene Powell on September 1, 1976, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Ottawa, Kansas. Gene died on September 4, 1987. Clara worked at the Anderson County Hospital and Garnett High School. Clara belonged to the Ladies Auxiliary 6397, Friendly Card Club, Junction Card Club, and Spring Branch Club. She was a member of Holy Angels Catholic Church and Holy Angels Altar Society. She is survived by two sons, Dennis Sobba and wife Nancy of Jacksonville, Arkansas; and Ronald Sobba of Garnett, Kansas; one daughter, Jane Katzer and husband Clyde of Greeley, Kansas; two sisters, Doris Hicks of Garnett, Kansas and Evelyn Pontius of Medford, Oregon; thirteen grandchildren; twenty-six great grandchildren; and one great- great granddaughter. Clara was preceded in death by her parents; six brothers Lambert, Peter, Edward, Matthew, Joseph and Johnny Bures; four sisters, Emma Malburg, Geneva Bures, Kathryn Mader, and Anna Marie Gretencord; daughter-in-law, Ethel Sobba; and two granddaughters, Patti Katzer and Patty Sobba. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Holy Angels Catholic Church in Garnett, Kansas, with Father Brian Klingele officiating. Burial will follow at the Holy Angels Cemetery in Garnett, Kansas. The family will be present to greet friends after a wake service which will be held at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, March 17, 2008, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Holy Angels Building Fund or St. Rose School and left in care of Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, P.O. Box 408, Garnett, Kansas 66032.
