Clara Louise Whaley, 78, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away July 24, 2009 at the KU Medical Center, Kansas City, Kansas. Clara was born September 20, 1930 at Garden City, Kansas, the daughter of Alfred and Opal Mae (Short) VanVleet. She grew up in the Littleton, Colorado area. Clara was working as a waitress in Wichita, Kansas when she met her husband. On March 30, 1959 she married Delmar Lee Whaley at New Kirk, Oklahoma. They lived in Wichita, Kansas City, Ottawa and Garnett. Clara was a homemaker and worked at Fashion Belt in Ottawa. She enjoyed sewing, crossword puzzles, and playing cards. While in Ottawa they attended the First Assembly of God Church and then attended the Garnett Church Of The Nazarene after moving to Garnett. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Charles Edwin VanVleet. Clara is survived by her husband, Delmar Lee Whaley of the home; a son James Randall Whaley of Kansas City, Kansas; five grandchildren; and a brother, George Alvin VanVleet of Denver, Colorado. Memorial services will be held at 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 28, 2009 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, Garnett. The family will greet friends following the service.
