Daniel J. Bishop, age 70, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on December 30, 2009 at his home. Dan was born on May 25, 1939, near Centerville, Kansas, the son of Jacob Thomas and Erma (Giffen) Bishop. He grew up in the Blue Mound area, graduating from Blue Mound High School in 1957. He worked on his family's dairy farm while he was in school. Following high school he entered the U.S. Army in June 1959, after completing basic training at Ft. Leonard Wood, Danny was stationed at the Army's NIKE missile base at Lawson, Missouri. While there, he played basketball for the Army and in 1960, his team earned a birth in the United States Army Air Defense Command (USARADCOM) Championship Basketball Tournament in San Francisco. He was discharged from the Army in May 1962 and returned to Kincaid, Kansas. After returning from the Army, Danny drove a truck for Willis Henderson. He began working at Cities Service, later Williams Pipeline, in Welda in the early 1970's. His work at Williams took him to Caney and Wichita, as well as Wyoming, Colorado and Oklahoma, before returning to Welda in 1993. In his years at Williams Danny worked several different positions; his last being a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in October of 1998. After retiring from City Service, Dan began driving a school bus for Crabtree and Harmon and then later Apple Bus Company. He built great rapport with his students and co-drivers. Dan, the driver of #6 and his number retired in May of 2009, he continued to be part of the Apple Bus family, helping out with anything he could and keeping a close relationship with fellow employees. Dan was currently working at Envirolink in Garnett, Kansas. Danny married Pat Whitcomb in 1961, two children were born to this union Jeff and Jandy, and they later divorced. He later married Sally Medlen, one child, Stacy, was born to this union, they later divorced. Dan married Alberta Hager on August 1, 1998, she survives of Garnett. He was preceded in death by his parents; and sister-in-law Kathy Bayless Bishop. Dan is survived by his children; Jeff Durand and wife Mary of Humboldt, Kansas; Jandy Wiltse and husband Scott of Iola, Kansas; Stacy Swan and husband David of Norman, Oklahoma; four brothers, Waverly Bishop and wife Lillian of Osawatomie, Kansas; Roy Bishop of Olathe, Kansas; Mike Bishop and wife Bonnie of Parker, Kansas; Lester Bishop and wife Vickie of Moran, Kansas; one sister, Donna Stites and husband Ralph of Mound City, Kansas; many grandchildren and step grandchildren; nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, January 4, 2010 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow at the Pleasant View Cemetery in Blue Mound. Family will be present to greet friends from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Sunday evening at the funeral home in Garnett.
