Darlene M. Gumfory, 71, of Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, September 1, 2009, at the Allen County Hospital in Iola. Darlene was born April 24, 1938 in Hood River, Oregon the daughter of Raymond F. and Lena P. (Lowe) Whitworth. At a young age, she moved with her family to Neosho County, Kansas, where she grew up and graduated from Stark High School. She married Derrell Johnson and they were later divorced. She completed her nurses training at Independence, Kansas. On January 1, 1966, Darlene married Leland "Bon" Gumfory and they made their home in Iola. She helped her husband in the operation of the Zero Locker Plant for several years. She then worked as a licensed practical nurse in area nursing homes including Pinecrest and Windsor Place before ill health forced her retirement in 2003. She was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and Beta Sigma Phi. SURVIVORS: Husband: Leland "Bon" Gumfory of the home 2 Sons: Rick Johnson of Iola, Kansas and Jeff Johnson of Springdale, Arkansas 2 Daughters: Rose Johnson of Iola, Kansas and Maxalene Gumfory of Iola, Kansas 3 Brothers: Dale Whitworth of Houston, Texas, Dick Whitworth of Miami, Oklahoma and Danny Whitworth of Bull Head City, Arizona 1 Sister: Diane Richwine of Erie, Kansas 15 Grandchildren: Nikki, Tiffany, Shawna, Michael, Janie, Chris, Ben, Katie, Sarah, Rebecca, Teresa, Kimberly, Amy, Jessica, and Holly 11 Great Grandchildren She was preceded in death by a son, Bryan Johnson and a brother, Dwaine Whitworth, and a sister, Donna Goff. FUNERAL SERVICE: 10:30 a.m., Friday, September 4, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. The Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate.
