Don C. Hewitt, age 79, of Cherokee, Kansas formerly of Cottonwood Falls, passed away Wednesday, July 11, 2012 at the Salina Regional Health Center, Salina, Kansas. He was born on August 12, 1932, in Parsons, Kansas, the son of Tom C. and Marie G. (Nichols) Hewitt. Don grew up in Grand Junction, Colorado and Erie, Kansas, graduating from Erie High School. He attended Parsons Junior College for two years. On June 22, 1952 Don married Imogene Sager in Bronson, Kansas before entering the US Army. Don served in Korea during the Korean Conflict. Following his time in the service Don returned to the Moran, Kansas area. He earned his B.S. in Education from the University of Arkansas. Don taught Science at Roosevelt - Lincoln Junior High in Salina, Kansas for 21 years. Throughout his teaching career Don continued his own education, earning his Master's Degree from Southwestern College, Weatherford, Oklahoma. After teaching, Don and Imogene returned to Moran where he worked as an inspector at Klein Tool for 15 years. In 1998 Don and Imogene moved to Cottonwood Falls, Kansas, living there until moving to Cherokee, Kansas in 2010. Don's declining health dictated moving to Abilene Village Manor in 2012. While teaching Don was a member of various teachers' organizations including K.N.E.A. He was also a member of the V.F.W. They also attended the Cherokee Baptist Church while they lived there. Don's hobbies included arrowhead and fossil hunting and wood carving. He also raised homing pigeons and won many awards racing and showing the pigeons he had raised and trained. He was preceded in death by his parents, Tom and Marie Hewitt; and an infant daughter, Peggy Lynn Hewitt. Don is survived by his wife of 60 years, Imogene, of Abilene, Kansas; two sons, Gary Hewitt and wife Tinette of Guam and Kelly Hewitt and wife Xochitl of Topeka, Kansas; four daughters, Laura Frederick and husband Jim of Sylvan Grove, Kansas, Alice Sutton of Abilene, Kansas, Nancy Weber and husband Rich of Home, Kansas, and Susanne Brack and husband James of Augusta, Kansas; 21 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Jack Hewitt of Owasso, Oklahoma and Delbert Hewitt of Billings, Montana; two sisters, Dorothy Springer and husband Lee of Independence, Kansas and Phyllis Baker and husband John of Pleasant Hill, California; and numerous nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Saturday, July 14, 2012 at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel, 344 N. Cedar, Moran, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Moran Cemetery. Mr. Hewitt will lie in state at the funeral home from 10:00 AM - 8:00 PM Friday. Memorial contributions may be made to Alzheimer's - SEK/AAA or to the Cherokee Baptist Church and sent in care of the funeral home, 344 N. Cedar, Moran, Kansas 66755.
