Donald Francis McCoy, age 90, of Garnett, Kansas, formerly of Manhattan, Illinois "The Garden Spot of the World" passed away on Friday, February 3, 2012, at his home in Garnett. He was born on March 30, 1921, in Manhattan, the son of Mathias and Margaret (Walsh) McCoy. Don attended St. Joseph's Grade School in Manhattan before graduating from Peotone High School in Peotone, Illinois. Don was united in marriage to Jane A. Ritchie on June 23, 1956, in Wilmington, Illinois at the St. Rose Catholic Church. This union was blessed with one daughter, Sheila. He retired from Amoco Pipeline. In May 2010 Don and Jane moved to Garnett from Manhattan to be near their family. Garnett quickly became home with many wonderful new friends. Soon Don was referring to Garnett as "A Garden Spot". Don, a full blooded Irishman, filled his life with faith, family, friends, community, fun, food, music and dancing. Don was a lifelong active member of St. Joseph's Parish in Manhattan. He also participated in a variety of service and social organizations during his lifetime. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother Jim McCoy and wife, Emily; two sisters, Mary Ellen McCoy and Margaret Alice Schwiesow and husband, Bob. Donald is survived by his wife, Jane McCoy; daughter Sheila McCoy and husband Dennis Hachenberg of Garnett, Kansas; sister-in-law Rita McQueen of Wilton Center, Illinois; and numerous beloved nieces, nephews, cousins and lifelong friends. Jane, Sheila and Denny would like to express their appreciation to the many wonderful people of Garnett who have made Garnett a true home away from home for Don and Jane.
