Dortha Agnes Castleberry, age 88, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Monday, January 9, 2017, at Olathe Medical Center in Olathe, Kansas. She was born on April 28, 1928, Qulin, Missouri, the daughter of George Homer Hargiss and Lillie Pearl (Chandler) Hargiss. She grew up in the Poplar Bluff area, attending school at Qulin. Dortha married Harlan Hickman and they made their home east of Mildred, Kansas, then near Bush City, Kansas and later Garnett until Harlan's death. Dortha was united in marriage to Dale Castleberry on August 21, 1993, in Centerville, Kansas and they made their home in Garnett. Dortha had worked at HD Lee in Ottawa and at Warner Manufacturing in Garnett. In 1971 she began baking cakes out of her home as a hobby and made numerous cakes for family and friends over the years. For the last 20 years and until the time of her death Dortha worked with the weight watcher's programs in Paola and Ottawa. Dortha was an accomplished seamstress and made most all of her own clothes. She was a loving wife, mom, grandma and aunt, who will be missed dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother, Donald Hargiss. Dortha is survived by her husband, Dale Castleberry, of the home; son, Ronnie Hargiss of Moran, Kansas; six step-children, Jeff Castleberry and wife Peggy of Ottawa, Kansas, Gene Earnest of Yates Center Carolyn Yoder and husband Glen of Garnett, Kansas; Sharon Earnest of Osawatomie, Kansas; Sandra Jean Castleberry and husband Leroy of Fontana; Lenora Kay Castleberry of Arkansas; and several grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Friday, January 13, 2017, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Fairview Cemetery at Mildred, Kansas.
