Earl A. Meyers, age 87, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away March 9, 2009 at St. Luke's Hospital on the Plaza, Kansas City, Missouri. He was born on November 23, 1921 in LaHarpe, Kansas, the son of Arthur and Edna (Smoot) Meyers. He attended Allen County Schools before joining the Army around the age of 18. He served the Army for three years during World War II. He served in the European Theatre. He landed in Europe on D-Day plus 7. His service earned him a Purple Heart, before being discharged in December, 1945. Earl was united in marriage to his sweetheart, Opal Mae Bryan on January 4, 1946 at Garnett, Kansas. This union was blessed with five children. They made their home in Garnett, Kansas, and have resided there ever since. They became members of the First Christian Church in Garnett and helped in the building of the present church building. Earl and Opal have been members there for approximately 61 years, where Earl served as a deacon for many years and a term as treasurer. Earl worked for Western Auto Hardware for several years. In September of 1974 Earl was hired to work for the City of Garnett, water and gas department, working there for 16 years before retiring. Earl enjoyed the outdoors and loved tending his garden. He was a loving husband, father, and grandfather, as well as a wonderful friend to many people. He was always there to help anyone who needed it and will be remembered fondly. He will be missed, but remembered always by his family. He is survived by his wife, Opal Meyers; five children, Sharyl Holcomb of San Marcos, California; Terry Smelser and husband Gary of Blacklick, Ohio; Earl B. Meyers and wife Sue of Raymore, Missouri; Laurel Wichman and husband Don of Milford, Illinois; and Cara Sharpe and husband Michael of Ft. Gibson, Oklahoma; ten grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, March 14, 2009, at the First Christian Church in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery, Garnett, Kansas. The family will be present to greet friends from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Friday evening, March 13, 2009, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett.
