Edna Charlene Rogers, age 81 of Garnett, Kansas passed away on Sunday, May 27, 2018, at Madison, Kansas while attending an Esslinger family get-together at the very site where her father was born. Charlene was born February 14, 1937 in Quincy, Kansas, to Harry Esslinger and Edna Myrtle Cummins. Charlene attended grade school in Quincy. She graduated from high school in 1955 at Virgil, Kansas where she was a cheerleader. At Kansas State University she met Burke Rogers. They were married December 22, 1957 at the First Christian Church in Eureka, Kansas. Upon Burke’s graduation from KSU in 1958, they entered the US Air Force serving therein for 21 years. Daughter Dela Rae was born in Amarillo, Texas in November 1958. Son Kurt Jay was born at RAF Fairford, England in August 1961. During her years as a military wife she was involved in Officer’s Wives Club activities as well as golfing. She also did some substitute teaching at Del Rio, Texas and RAF Fairford. Charlene was an accomplished knitter, making many beautiful afghans, sweaters, and articles. While they were stationed in Washington DC, Charlene worked in a bank for several years. After retirement from the USAF in 1979, Charlene and Burke returned to Garnett and life on the ranch. Charlene worked several years at the sewing factory there, and did some substitute teaching at Central Heights school. She really enjoyed playing Bridge, and participating in First Christian Church activities where she was a long-time member. She loved her little doggies over the years, loved hosting family dinners, fixing a good meal, and just spending time with family. Charlene was preceded in death by her mother in 1984, father in 1989, and brother Daryl in 2013. She is survived by Burke of the home; daughter, Dela and spouse, Hunter Gadd of Fredericksburg Virginia; son, Kurt and spouse, Anita of Garnett; six grandchildren; and four great grandchildren. Her Memorial Service will be held at 11:00 AM, Friday, June 1, 2018 at the First Christian Church, Garnett. Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church and left in care of the funeral home. A private inurnment will be held at Pleasantview (Glenloch) Cemetery at a later date.
