Edward M. Riebel, age 91, of Iola, Kansas, passed away on Tuesday, October 17, 2017 at Heartland Meadows in Iola. Edward Martin Riebel was the sixth of thirteen children born to Joseph and Flora (Decker) Riebel. Ed was born on February 8, 1926 in Westphalia, Kansas. In December of 1945, Ed entered into the US Army. He served as a medic in the Occupation of China until being discharged due to Rheumatic Fever in December of 1946. On July 25, 1949 he was united in marriage to Eleanor Weber at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Humboldt, Kansas. Their union was blessed with six children and lasted for 68 years. They first made their home west of Iola, they later moved to Oroville, California for a while before moving to Tulsa, Oklahoma, Liberal and El Dorado, Kansas before returning to Iola. Ed worked as the shop foreman for United Tire in Iola. He then went on to work for the Water and Gas Department for the City of Iola from 1967 until retiring in 1988. He enjoyed camping and going to local dances. Some of his greatest joys were spending time with his grandchildren and attending his children and grandchildren's events. While his children were in 4-H, Ed and Eleanor served as leaders for the City Slickers 4-H Club. Ed was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Iola. Ed was a Fourth Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, Council #6817. He was also a member of the LaHarpe VFW, Post 6324. Edward was preceded in death by a son, Lloyd Riebel; a daughter, Sundra Meitler; his parents; four brothers, Raymond, George, Leonard and Bernard Riebel; four sisters, Cecilia McCullough, Mary Batson, Helen Fedders, and Dorothy Yokum. He is survived by his wife Eleanor of Iola; three sons, Danny Riebel and wife, Marta, Mike Riebel and wife, Julie, and Stan Riebel and wife, Kim, all of Iola, Kansas; one daughter, Pam Wilson and husband, Cliff of Overland Park, Kansas; son-in-law Ken Meitler of Sylvan Grove, Kansas; two brothers, Earl Riebel of LaHarpe, Kansas and Anthony Riebel of Independence, Missouri; two sisters, Flora Mae Gaylor of Tulsa, Oklahoma and Bernice Trowbridge of Iola, Kansas; eleven grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10:30 AM, Saturday, October 21, 2017, at St. John's Catholic Church in Iola. Burial will follow in St. Joseph Cemetery, Humboldt, Kansas. A Parish Rosary will be recited at 6:30 PM, Friday, October 20, 2017, at St. John's Catholic Church. The family will greet friends following the Rosary in the Parish Hall.
