E.E. "Gene" Sloan, 91, of Humboldt, Kansas, died Monday, November 7, 2011, at his home. Gene was born July 16, 1920, at Vincentville, Kansas in Allen County the son of James Austin and Nora Ellen (Rhodes) Sloan. On February 16, 1941, Gene married Grace I. Carroll in Iola and they made their home on a dairy farm just southeast of Iola until moving to a farm northeast of LaHarpe. They eventually moved to a farm southwest of Iola where they lived until moving to Humboldt four years ago. Along with farming and raising livestock he worked a number of years as a technician for the American Breeder's Association and later had a small engine repair shop. Gene enjoyed all animals but was especially fond of raising miniature donkeys. He was a member of the Salem United Methodist Church southwest of Iola. SURVIVORS: His wife of 70 years: Grace Sloan of the home 1 Son: Jay Sloan & wife, Linda of Tallahassee, Florida 2 Daughters: Evelyn Williams & husband, Howard of Wichita, Kansas, and Mary Jo Brewington of Kansas City, Missouri 1 Sister: Tracy Rawlings 10 Grandchildren, 12 Great Grandchildren and 7 Great Great Grandchildren Many nieces and nephews He was preceded in death by his parents, 5 brothers and 5 sisters. VISITATION: 6:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 9, 2011, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. FUNERAL SERVICE: 1:30 p.m., Thursday, November 10, 2011, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. Chaplain Lloyd W. Houk will officiate.
