Elma R. Hampton, age 81, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Saturday, November 6, 2010, at the Eaglecrest Retirement Community in Salina, Kansas. She was born on April 7, 1929, in Newton, Kansas, the daughter of Frank D. and Naomi (Stahly) Zook. In January 1946, the family, which also included her two sisters and a brother, moved to Garnett, Kansas. Elma graduated from Garnett High School in 1947, and that fall was employed by Earl L. Knauss, publisher of The Garnett Review. She worked on the newspaper, full and later part-time, until 1955. On September 10, 1950, she was united in marriage to Don J. Hampton. This union was blessed with two daughters, Donna Jo and Lana Jeanne. Her husband preceded her in death on June 5, 1997. Although she was primarily a homemaker, she later worked part-time for thirteen years at the Garnett Public Library. She retired from her position there in January 1999. A member of the First Christian Church, she attended regularly until moving to Salina shortly before her death. She was also a member of Chapter Y, P.E.O. Sisterhood. Elma was preceded in death by her husband Don; her parents, Frank and Naomi Zook; her brother, Keith Zook; and a son-in-law, Donald Buchwald. She is survived by her daughters, Donna Buchwald of Salina, Kansas; Lana Richardson and husband Carl of Emporia, Kansas; six grandchildren, LeAnna Buchwald of Norwalk, Connecticut; Darrin Buchwald and wife Kandi of Minneapolis, Kansas; Kevin Buchwald and wife Cierra of San Marcos, California; Brent Buchwald and wife Kristi of Salina, Kansas; Craig Richardson of Coronado, California; and Eric Richardson of Rose Hill, Kansas; seven great grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Hutton and husband Kenneth of New Braunfels, Texas; Joan Goodall and husband Eugene of New Braunfels, Texas; sister-in-law Janet Zook of Idabel, Oklahoma; nieces, nephews, cousins, and many friends. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Friday, November 12, 2010, at the First Christian Church in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Thursday, November 11, 2010, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett.
