Esther Certain

Esther Certain, age 76, of Garnett, Kansas passed away Sunday, October 18, 2009 at her home. Esther Maye Certain was born on April 16, 1933 at Garnett, Kansas, the daughter of Perry LeRoy and Opal Amelia (Carrier) Gordon. She attended Parker and Gorham high schools before marrying Robert F. Certain on August 30, 1952. This union was blessed with two daughters, Mary and Melody. Esther was a loving wife and mother and a caregiver all of her life. She loved gardening, was a member of the 4-H Chapter, a member of the First Baptist Church in Garnett, American Baptist Women, Southern Baptist Association, and was a Sunday school teacher for 35 years. She was preceded in death by her parents, Perry and Opal Gordon; one sister, Barbara Hampton; two brothers, Richard Gordon and Billy Gordon; and three half brothers, Wayne, Lynn Erving, and Roy "Pete" Gordon; and a nephew, Bill Certain. She is survived by her husband, Robert Certain of the home; two daughters, Mary Certain of Benton, Kansas and Melody Certain and husband Chuck of Garnett, Kansas; three grandchildren, Roxann Brecheisen, Manny Certain and Maurice Certain; great-granddaughter, Eva Rose Brecheisen; two step grandchildren, GiGi and Charles; and seven step great grandchildren; two sisters, Doris Shelton of Kansas City, Missouri and Dorothy Thompson of Kechi, Kansas; two brothers, Bob Gordon of Homewood, Kansas; Jim Gordon of Pomona, Kansas; one half brother, Roy Gordon of Ottawa, Kansas; nephew Clyde Certain of Houston, Texas; and niece Charlotte Certain of San Francisco, California. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 PM, Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at the First Baptist Church, Garnett. Interment will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. The family will greet friends from 6:00 - 8:00 PM, Tuesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions are suggested to the First Baptist Church or to Hospice Care of Kansas.
