Dr. Floyd A. Boeken, D.V.M., age 86, of Iola, Kansas, died Friday, July 3, 2009, at Windsor Place Nursing Center in Iola. Floyd was born March 8, 1923, at Moran, Kansas, the son of John Arthur and Zelma (Beaman) Boeken. He attended Golden Valley, Prairie Hall and Fairview Grade Schools and graduated from LaHarpe High School in 1942. World War II had begun and he wanted to enlist in pilot training after he graduated from high school but was turned away. He enrolled in photography school in Topeka and when drafted in February of 1943 his photography background led him to photography with the U.S. Army Air Corps. On January 4, 1944, he married Gladys M. Fronk and in March he went overseas. Floyd was in the 9th Air Force, 10th Photo Reconnaisance Group, 34th Squadron. He served in the European Theater, England, France and Germany. He was awarded five campaign stars, two Presidential citations and a bronze star. Following his honorable discharge from the service, he returned to the Iola area and attended Iola Junior College where he played football. He continued his education at the Kansas State University School of Veterinary Medicine and received his doctorate. He was in private practice at his clinic in Gas from 1952 until 1970. From 1970 until he retired in 1988, he was a Federal Veterinarian doing inspections at meat and poultry plants. His wife, Gladys, preceded him in death on May 15, 1989. On March 3, 1991, Floyd married Alice (Grimes) Hobbs and they made their home in Iola. He was a member of the First Baptist Church in Iola, the Iola American Legion, LaHarpe Veterans of Foreign Wars, Experimental Aircraft Association and American Veterinary Medicine Association. Floyd enjoyed rebuilding warbirds, PT19, scale model cars and aircrafts, woodworking, motorcycling, boating, RVing and flying. SURVIVORS: Wife: Alice Boeken of the home 2 Sons: Chris Boeken & wife, Kim of St. Joseph, Missouri and Dennis Clark of Iola, Kansas 3 Daughters: Michele Bodemann & husband, Steve and Jonette Crane & husband, Jerry all of Hot Springs, Arkansas, and Deborah Smith & husband, Mark of Haven, Kansas 1 Sister: Wilma Morrison of Lone Elm, Kansas 12 Grandchildren & 5 Great Grandchildren He was preceded in death by two sons, Brad Boeken and Griff Boeken, and by a brother, Wilbur Boeken. Cremation has taken place. GRAVESIDE SERVICE: 1:00 p.m., Monday, July 6, 2009, at Highland Cemetery in Iola. Dr. Michael Quinn will officiate.
