Floyd Hangen

d. April 3, 2010

Floyd E. Hangen, 79, of Iola, Kansas, died Saturday, April 3, 2010, at his home. Floyd was born October 13, 1930, at Dayton, Ohio, the son of Cleo John and Glenna Myrle (Welsh) Hangen. He grew up in Ohio and graduated from Butler Township High School in Vandalia, Ohio. He joined the United States Navy and served four years during the Korean Conflict, for which he received the Navy Air Medal. On August 6, 1952, Floyd married Ruth A. Weber at Lordsburg, New Mexico. They made their home in Tucson, Arizona, Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Wichita, Kansas where he worked in the aircraft industry. He then began his career for the U.S. Department of Defense as a quality assurance specialist at missile sites around Salina and Topeka, Kansas before moving to San Diego, California in 1963, where he worked on the Atlas and Cruise Missile Projects, frequently traveling to Cape Canaveral and Washington D.C. He retired as a project supervisor on January 1, 1986, and he and Ruth moved to Borrego Springs, California. They moved to Iola 16 years ago from Borrego Springs. Floyd was mechanically inclined and enjoyed building dune buggies with his son in his earlier years and then worked on and restored antique radios in his later years. As a father he served many years as a Little League umpire and coach in San Diego. He and Ruth enjoyed traveling in their motor home after retirement, spending winters in El Cajon, California with their son and family, and summers in Iola, with their daughter and family. He was an avid San Diego Chargers and Kansas City Chiefs fan. His interests included history, reading, genealogy, and computers. He had an active e-mail and Facebook correspondence. He especially enjoyed his family - his children, grandchildren and great grandson and was known for his skill at smoking pork ribs which were enjoyed at every family occasion, summer and winter.
