Frances L. Newman, 65, of Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, September 22, 2009, at St. Vincent Hospital in Portland, Oregon. Frances was born August 25, 1944, in Topeka, Kansas, the daughter of Charles and Magdaline (Payne) Lewis. She grew up in Topeka where she graduated from high school. On April 19, 1969, Frances married William (Bill) Newman in Topeka, and they made their home at Portland, Oregon. She worked as a receptionist for Consolidated Freight in Portland. She and Bill moved to Iola in 1997. She was a member of the Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church and Red Hat Society of Iola. Frances enjoyed sewing and crafts and loved to visit her kids and grandkids. SURVIVORS: Husband of 40 years: William (Bill) Newman of the home 2 Daughters: Dawn Williams of Little Rock, Arkansas and Michelle Simms of Temple, Texas Many Step, Adopted and play children A host of Grandchildren & Great Grandchildren 5 Siblings: Bessie Chiles & Theron Lewis both of Portland, OR, Martha Amado & husband, Tony and Ellvia Wesley & husband, David all of Topeka, KS, and Arthur Lewis & wife, Mary Ann of Lake Charles, LA She was preceded in death by her parents, daughter, Estella (Baby Faye) Newman, and three sisters, Charlene Gardenhire, Wanda King and Becky Dansby. VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 1, 2009, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. FUNERAL SERVICE: 2:00 p.m., Friday, October 2, 2009, at Ward Chapel A.M.E. Church in Iola. BURIAL: Highland Cemetery, Iola, Kansas MEMORIAL: American Cancer Society Memorials gifts may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
