Frances Pauline Smith, age 90, of Iola, Kansas, died Sunday, October 9, 2011, at the Moran Manor. Frances was born September 14, 1921 at Colony, Kansas, the daughter of Lloyd and Ethel (Heath) Weatherman. She grew up in Colony and graduated from Colony High School, Iola Community College, and began teaching school at Moran. On September 24, 1944, Frances married Raymond D. Smith in Colony and began making their home in Iola. She was skilled at cooking, interior decorating, and landscaping her home. After raising her family, she returned to work for the Iola School System and remained there until her retirement. She was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola, as well as Iola Music Club, Iola Garden Club, Iola B.P.W., Sorosis Club, D.A.R. and many other organizations in the community. Survivors include two sons, Vince Smith of Grain Valley, Missouri, and Mike (Lana) Smith of Kansas City; one sister, Arley Womack of Emporia; several grandchildren and great grandchildren, nieces and nephews, many lifelong friends, and special caregivers, Kim and Larry Peterson of Iola. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Raymond, twin brother Robert Weatherman, and infant brother James "Jimmy Jay" Weatherman. Funeral services will be 1:00 p.m. on Friday, October 14, 2011 at Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. Burial will follow in the Colony cemetery. Memorials are suggested to Wesley United Methodist Church; Friends of the Bowlus; or charity of your choice. Memorial gifts may be left with the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements. The family has requested no floral tributes.
