Frederick G. Apt, Jr., 79, of Iola, Kansas, died Thursday, December 11, 2008, at his home. Fred was born September 4, 1929, in Iola, Kansas, the son of Frederick B. and Ada P. (Norton) Apt. He graduated from Kemper Military Academy and then attended the University of Kansas. After graduating from K.U. with a degree in history, he married Denise Coleman on June 8, 1951. He then served with the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War and later in the reserves, retiring as Lt. Colonel. He returned to K.U. and graduated from law school in 1956. After graduation, he made his home in Iola where he practiced law. During his career, he served as county attorney for Allen County, served on the Allen County Community College Board of Trustees, served on the Allen County Hospital board and was a member of their endowment board. Fred was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Iola, and had served as an elder. He also was a member of the Iola Masonic Lodge, Mirza Shrine, Iola Elks Lodge, and the Iola American Legion. He was very active in the Iola Community Theater and participated in numerous productions. Fred enjoyed several sports, but his main passion was hunting, an interest second only to his family. He is survived by his wife, Denise of the home; 2 sons, Frederick G. Apt, III & wife, Janet of Iola, KS, and Richard C. Apt of Milwaukee, WI; 1 daughter, Barbara Bukaty & husband, Daniel of Overland Park, KS; 5 Grandchildren, Aleaka Morgan, Derick Apt, Jeremy Apt, Preston Bukaty and Harrison Bukaty; 1 Great Grandchild, Bennett Morgan. Fred was preceded in death by an infant sister, Blanche, a brother, Charles H. Apt, II, and a sister, Elizabeth Lee Apt. Visitation will be held from 4:00-6:00 p.m., Sunday, Dec. 14, 2008, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Monday, Dec. 15, 2008, at the First Presbyterian Church in Iola, with the Rev. Jim Rausch officiating. Burial will follow in Highland Cemetery in Iola, with military honors. Memorials are suggested to the Iola Community Theater, Iola Public Library, or the First Presbyterian Church and may be left at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel in Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
