Gary Smith

Gary Ambrose Smith, 69, of Iola, Kansas, died Wednesday, April 6, 2011, at his home. Gary was born January 10, 1942, in Iola, Kansas, the son of Ambrose John and Rachel R. (Kraus) Smith. He graduated from Iola High School in 1960. Gary married Stonna Zyskowski and they later divorced. He worked for the City of Iola 31 years and was street and alley foreman when he retired. He also helped Gordon Conger in his farming operation for 20 years. Gary married Sue Freeman Laymon and they made their home in Iola. He was a member of St. John's Catholic Church, Knights of Columbus and Eagles Lodge. SURVIVORS: His wife: Sue Smith of the home 1 Son: Shane Smith of Moran, KS 1 Daughter: Shelley Davis of Yates Center, KS 2 Step-Sons: Mike Laymon of Yates Center and Kim Laymon of Iola. 1 Brother: Chuck Smith of Copperas Cove, TX 1 Sister: Sally Robinson of Kansas City, MO 12 Grandchildren and 13 Great Grandchildren He was preceded in death by his parents and brother, Marty Smith. VISITATION: 6:00-7:00 p.m., Friday, April 8, 2011, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola ROSARY & MASS: The parish rosary will be recited at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, April 9, 2011, at St. John's Catholic Church in Iola, followed by the mass at 10:30 a.m. The Reverend Robert B. Wachter will be celebrant.
