Geraldine "Dean" Whalen, age 84, of Beagle, Kansas, passed away at the Villa St. Joseph in Overland Park, Kansas, on Monday, May 10, 2010. She was born on January 21, 1926, at Gainesville, Missouri, the daughter of John Thomas Chisam and Edgie (Smith) Chisam. Dean grew up in Gainesville moving to Kansas City, following school. She was united in marriage to Loman Whalen at Kansas City, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children. They moved to Beagle in 1957. Dean worked at Wal-Mart in Paola for almost 30 years, retiring in March, 2010. She had worked as a cashier, then training new cashiers, before working in the women's apparel. Dean attended the Faith Baptist Church in Osawatomie. She enjoyed crocheting and taking pictures of flowers. She also loved to feed the birds and complained about the squirrels; but her greatest joy was her grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Loman, on April 28, 1988; daughter, Patricia Summers on May 19, 2009; two brothers, James and Dale Chisam; and two sisters, Dona Burks and Julia Adams. Dean was survived by her son, Gary Whalen and wife Linda of St. Louis, Missouri; her daughter, Pam Breedlove of LaCygne, Kansas; two brothers, Gene Chisam and wife Linda of Gainesville, Missouri; Granvil Chisam and wife Marge of Ottawa, Kansas; two sisters, Maxine Crowell of Beagle, Kansas; Pauline Jones and husband Wayne of Tonganoxie, Kansas; eight grandchildren; and eight great grandchildren. Graveside services will be held at 10:00 AM, Friday, May 14, 2010 at the Beagle Cemetery, Beagle, Kansas. The family will greet friends at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett Thursday evening from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. Memorial contributions may be made to W.I.N.G.S., a breast cancer support group.
