Harley Eugene "Gene" Reaves, age 84, passed away on November 30, 2024, in Moran, Kansas.
Gene was born on February 9, 1940, to Edmund and OraBell (Byram) Reaves. He was one of ten children. Gene graduated from Humboldt High School with the class of 1958. For a short time, he worked in a sawmill in Idaho, before returning to Humboldt to briefly work at the brickyard. He then found his calling working for the City of Humboldt. Gene enjoyed working for the city and was always there for anyone who needed help. He instilled good work ethics.
On June 10, 1962, Gene married Sandra Layman in Humboldt. They were blessed with two children.
After retiring, he looked forward to spending time with his grandchildren. Gene loved to garden, specifically tomatoes and cucumbers. He also enjoyed fishing and telling stories to anyone who would listen. Gene didn't know a stranger. He was a volunteer at the food pantry and was active with the Iola Senior Center, playing cards. Gene also helped deliver for Meals on Wheels.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Sandra; siblings, Leon, Virginia, Dorothy, Edmund, Jr., and Charles; and grandsons, Aaron Reaves and Brandon Nading.
He is survived by siblings, Larry, Janet, Verna, and Joan; children, Lutrecia (William) Nading and Tom (Missy) Reaves; grandchildren, Anthony (Megan) Reaves, Troy Reaves, Justin (Kacie) Nading, Jessica Nading, Joshua (Angela) Nading, and Janelle Nading; and great-grandchildren, Leo, Keagan, Oliver, Kread, Amanda, Arianna, Alana, and Ava.
A funeral for Gene will be held on Thursday, December 5, 2024, at 10:00 AM at Faith Assembly of God Church in Humboldt, Kansas. Burial will immediately follow at Mount Hope Cemetery in Humboldt. Family will greet friends at a visitation the night prior to the service, December 4, 2024, from 6:00-8:00 PM at the church.
