Harold Weldon Houk, 92, of Moran, passed away January 12, 2024, at the Moran Manor. Harold was born March 29, 1931, Moran, to Russell Eugene and Jennie May (Whitlow) Houk. The family moved to the Whitlow/Houk homestead northwest of Moran where he attended Fairlawn, a one room school house, until the fifth grade. He attended Moran Elementary and graduated from Moran Rural High School in 1949. During high school, he played football, basketball, and participated in other clubs. He attended Iola Junior College (on the third floor of Iola High) from 1950-1952. He graduated May 1952. While attending Iola Junior College, he played offensive lineman for the college football team. Harold played on the final Iola Junior College football season during the fall of 1952.
Harold served in the US Army from 1954 to 1956. While serving he was stationed in Verdun, France. Upon returning from service, Harold farmed with his father and older brother E. Richard Houk.
Harold married Joy L. Rinehart on April 3, 1960, at the Humboldt United Methodist Church. They met at the LaHarpe Saturday night dance. They established their home and farm west of Moran. Joy died November 5, 2015.
Harold was a member of the Moran United Methodist Church, Moran American Legion, Marmaton Lodge #0245, Hardly Able Fire Co. Mirza Shriners, and Mirza Shriners (Pittsburg).
He loved watching basketball and football games, especially the Kansas City Chiefs.
Harold is survived by his daughter Brenda Armstrong & husband, Jim, of Moran; Granddaughter Jenni Armstrong of Moran; Step-Grandsons: J.D. Armstrong and Andrew Armstrong (Alaina) both of Topeka, Sister-in-law: Ann Houk of Moran, Brothers-in-law:
Vaughn Rinehart & wife Margaret of Humboldt; Lyman Rinehart & wife Nanci of Goodyear, Arizona. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, brother, sisters-in-law Maxine Houk and Janet Rinehart, and brother-in-law Mark Rinehart.
Visitation with the family will be at The Venue, Feuerborn Family Funeral Service on Friday, January 26, from 5 to 7 pm. A memorial service for Harold Houk will be held at 10 am, Saturday, January 27, 2024, at the Moran United Methodist Church. A private family inurnment will be at the Moran Rose Land Cemetery.
