Harold D. Yokum, 90, of Iola, Kansas, died Wednesday, March 30, 2011, at Iola Nursing Center. Harold was born May 4, 1920, at Colony, Kansas, the son of Ernst D. and Nelle Mary (Hoffmeier) Yokum. He graduated from Colony High School in 1938 and attended Kansas State University before joining the military. On November 10, 1943, Harold married Betty I. Waugh in Oakland, California. After serving with the United States Navy during World War II, he graduated from the Williams School of Mortuary Science. Harold and Betty made their home in Iola and joined David C. Waugh and Thomas O. Waugh in the operation of the Waugh Funeral Home. He and his wife Betty eventually became owners of the family business and owned and operated Waugh-Yokum Funeral Home until he retired in 1982. Harold especially enjoyed fishing and gardening. His memberships include the Wesley United Methodist Church, American Legion, V.F.W., all Iola Masonic bodies, and Mirza Temple. He served a number of years on the Iola Public Library Board and Deer Creek Watershed Board, and was a 50 year member of the Kansas Funeral Directors and Embalmers Association. SURVIVORS: His wife of 67 years: Betty Waugh Yokum of the home 3 Children: David Yokum & wife, Nancy of Iola, KS, Tom Yokum & wife, Beverly of Waverly, KS, and Mary Mohr & husband, Gene of Rose Hill, KS 1 Brother-In-Law: Rollin Strickler of Colony, KS 7 Grandchildren: David, Bryan & Rebecca Mohr, Thomas Yokum & wife, Melanie & Ben Yokum, and Lorrie Bell & husband, Seth, and Glenna Yokum 2 Great Grandchildren: Owen Yokum and Sage Bell He was preceded in death by a brother, Dale Yokum, and a sister, Ina Strickler. FUNERAL SERVICE: 2:00 p.m., Saturday, April 2, 2011, at the Wesley United Methodist Church in Iola. Rev. Trudy Kenyon Anderson will officiate.
