Herman A. Nilges, age 85, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Monday, August 15, 2011, at St. Luke's South Hospital in Overland Park, Kansas. Herman was born on July 28, 1926, in Anderson County, Kansas, near Scipio, the son of Samuel and Mary (Peine) Nilges. He grew up and attended school in Anderson County, living all of his life except for 2 years that he spent in Gypsum, Kansas. As a young man he farmed and hauled milk with his brother. Herman then went to work for Anderson County as a truck driver for 28 years, retiring in 1991. After retiring, he mowed yards and enjoyed gardening. He was united in marriage to Lois Blubaugh on December 20, 1949, in Iola, Kansas. This union was blessed with three children. Herman enjoyed fishing, hunting and trap shooting, as well as his bird dogs. He traveled to shooting contests, and was a member of the Garnett Gun Club. His greatest joy was his grandchildren and great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Mary Nilges; two brothers, and four sisters. Herman is survived by his wife, Lois Nilges, of the home; his son, Mike Nilges and wife Heather of Garnett, Kansas; two daughters, Janette Bilderback and husband David of Garnett, Kansas; Debbie Graue and husband, Ted Belt of Overland Park, Kansas; two brothers, Fred Nilges of Emporia, Kansas; Bernie Nilges and wife Norma Jean of Iola, Kansas; eight grandchildren; and five great grandchildren. Funeral services will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Thursday, August 18, 2011, at the Feuerborn Family Funeral Service Chapel in Garnett, Kansas. Burial will follow in the Garnett Cemetery. Family will be present to greet friends from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday evening at the funeral home. Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice Care of Kansas.
