Homer G. Thompson, Sr., age 95, of Garnett, Kansas, passed away on Thursday, June 2, 2011. He died much of the way he lived, quietly and with dignity, in the home where he and Lelah shared for over 60 plus years. He was born September 28, 1915 in Anderson County, Kansas, the son of Marcus Thompson and Lennie (Cross) Thompson. He was one of eleven children. Homer married Lelah Welborn on November 25, 1939. They would have been married 65 years a week after her death on November 18, 2004. This union was blessed with three children, Betty Still of Garnett, Kansas; Sharon Rocker and husband Butch of Garnett, Kansas; and Homer Thompson, Jr. of the home and fiance Brenda Harness of Lee's Summit, Missouri; five grandchildren and ten great grandchildren; with the newest to arrive in July. He served in the United States Army from 1943 to 1945 during World War II in the 345th Infantry, 87th Division. Homer was assigned many jobs but primarily driving trucks. He wasn't too vocal about what he saw and did, but was always proud to have served. After the army, he continued driving trucks, mostly gasoline trucks for Cyrus, R.C. White and later Ep French. Homer was described by his family from early on as reliable and steady. Educated to the 6th grade, continuing school for him, in his day and situation was not an option, he was never without work. His children and grandchildren remember him as always being there, never complaining and never without a comment or nickname for those he cared about. Homer was preceded in death by his parents, Marcus and Lennie Thompson; sisters, Ruby Price; Eva Timkar; Virginia Moore and Nina Thompson; his brothers, Leonard Thompson; Charles Thompson; Ben Thompson; Wilbur Thompson; and Homer's twin Howard Thompson. His only surviving brother is Eugene Thompson of Tucson, Arizona.
