Howard Smart

Howard D. Smart, 74, of Iola, Kansas passed away Sunday, April 21, 2013, at his home. Howard was born February 4, 1939, at LaHarpe, Kansas, the son of Robert Leo and Annie Christine (McCulley) Smart. He graduated from LaHarpe High School. On October 21, 1961, Howard married Ruth M. Swanson at Grace Lutheran Church in Iola. They have always made their home in the Iola area. Howard served in the U.S. Army for two years, worked at Milne & Mann Tire Company in Iola, and retired from Monarch Cement Company in Humboldt after working there 25 years as a driller and blaster. He enjoyed working with his cattle, sharing at the coffee shop and being with his family. He was a member of the V.F.W. and American Legion both in Chanute. SURVIVORS: His wife of 51 years: Ruth Smart of the home 1 Son: Jack Smart & wife, Net of Longview, TX 4 Daughters: Carol Olson & husband, Joe of rural Elsmore, KS, Sandra Rangel & husband, Tom of Louisburg, KS, Sharon Kress and Karen Smart both of Hutchinson, KS 12 Grandchildren and a number of great grandchildren He was preceded in death by his son-in-law Kirk "Pete" Kress, infant brother Walter Eugene Smart and brothers Russell and Jerry Smart. VISITATION: 6:30-7:30 p.m., Wednesday, April 24, 2013, at Grace Lutheran Church in Iola.
