Ivan Eugene Powell of 1433 Northwestern, Iola, Kansas, died April 29, 2015 at Allen County Regional Hospital in Iola, Kansas. He was born August 23, 1926 to James (Jim) and Mabel Powell in Carlyle, KS. He served in the Navy during the Korean War from December 1951 to December 1955. His first tour of duty was aboard the USS Rogers DDR 876 in 1952. In 1953 he was transferred to the USS Orleck 886. He was Fire Control Technician 1st Class. He received the Good Conduct medal, China Service medal, Korean Presidential Unit Citation, Korean Service medal, United States Service medal, and National Defense Service medal. He was honorably discharged in December 1955. In September 1956, he married Janice Earleen Moore. They made their home in Iola where he worked at LeHigh Cement Plant. In 1957 they moved to California and he worked for Packard Bell Television, T.R.W. Space Industry, and sold Metropolitan Life Insurance. They returned to Iola in 1976 and he worked in maintenance at Gates Rubber Company, retiring in 1991. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, and playing cards at the Senior Center. He and Janice enjoyed camping during the winter in Texas and Arizona. He was a member of Calvary United Methodist Church and The American Legion Post 15. Survivors include his wife, Janice (Moore) Powell of the home; two children, Lisa Burton of Iola and Eric Powell of Chanute; grandchildren, Shawn LeGrande and Jeremy LaGrande of Kansas City and Natasha LaGrande of Springfield, MO; Wyatt Powell and Kiera Powell of Chanute; and two great grandsons, Mavrick LeGrande of Kansas City, and Ethan Games of Springfield, MO. Ivan was preceded in death by his parents, Jim and Mabel Powell and two brothers, Earl Powell of Iola, and Virgil Powell, Montrose, CO. Cremation has taken place. MEMORIAL VISITATION: 6:00-8:00 p.m., Friday, May 8, 2015, at Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola. MEMORIAL SERVICE: 2:00 p.m., Saturday, May 9, 2015, at Calvary United Methodist Church in Iola. Memorials are suggested to Calvary United Methodist Church and may be left at the church or with Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapel of Iola, which is in charge of arrangements.
