James Shinn

James O. "Jim" Shinn, 86, of Iola, Kansas, died Sunday, October 30, 2011, at Iola Nursing Center. Jim was born August 5, 1925, at Bronson, Kansas, the son of Orval Lawrence and Myrtle Nora (Nash) Shinn. He graduated from Bronson High School and served in the United States Navy during World War II serving as a motor machinist's mate second class in the Pacific Theater. On January 24, 1946, Jim married Thora Nichols and they made their home in Bronson before moving to Iola in 1948. He worked for Lehigh Cement Plant until it closed in 1971. After attending barber school in Wichita, he barbered in Iola, Uniontown, and then Piqua before retiring in 1999. Jim was an avid hunter and fisherman. He also enjoyed bowling, coached and umpired youth baseball, and he played catcher for the Bronson Baseball Town Team for a number of years. His memberships include the Bronson Masonic Lodge and Iola American Legion. Scott, KS 1 Brother-In-Law: Don Nichols & wife, Brenda of Wichita, KS 1 Sister-In-Law: Margaret Ruckman of Topeka, KS 6 Grandchildren: Kevin Shinn & wife, Diana, Melissa Gage & husband, Jason, Crystal, Brett & Tabitha Shinn, and Amber Sanchez & husband, Matt 9 Great Grandchildren VISITATION: 6:00-7:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 2, 2011, at the Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Chapel in Iola FUNERAL SERVICE: 11:00 a.m., Thursday, November 3, 2011, at the First Missionary Baptist Church in Uniontown, Kansas. Pastor Marty DeWitt will officiate.
