Jeanette Wolken, age 82, of Garnett, Kansas passed away on Saturday, October 10, 2020, at Baldwin Healthcare and Rehab, Baldwin City, Kansas.
M. Jeanette Van Leeuwen was born on December 12, 1937, at St. Paul, Kansas. She was the ninth of ten children born to Jake and Bertha (Jennings) Van Leeuwen. Jeanette grew up in St. Paul, graduating from high school there in 1955. On October 3, 1959, Jeanette was united in marriage to Louis Wolken at St. Paul. They made their first home in Greeley, Kansas before moving to their farm south of town a few years later. Life on the farm saw the birth and raising of five children. Jeanette was a dedicated and faithful member of St. John’s Catholic Church, where she was an active member of the Altar Society. Jeanette worked for United Telephone — Sprint, retiring after many years of service. Jeanette did not know what idle time was for, she constantly kept herself busy with many craft projects. She loved to make and share things with her family, some of her talents were seen in her Tole painting, embroidery, and crocheting. Jeanette loved her family and friends; she cherished her time being able to visit on the phone with them. Her homemade jelly and bread will be missed. Jeanette could always be counted on to be in attendance at her grandchildren’s sporting events. A look through her daily notes would reflect that her grandchildren were apparently some of the greatest athletes to ever play the game. As an avid Royals fan, Jeanette found common ground with countless family and friends. Jeanette loved providing lunch for her high school-aged grandchildren, and they loved the opportunity to spend a few minutes away from school.
Jeanette was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Louis on March 7, 2013; son, Gus on October 31, 2014; grandson, Ryan Campbell on February 1, 2002; seven siblings, Jerry Hill, Cleo Jacquinot, Jeanie LaForge, Roger, Ted, Gert Forbes, Harry.
She is survived by her children, Jane Campbell and Craig of Fort Scott, Eileen Bertels and Bill Jewell of Mayetta, Kansas, Sharon Mader and Alan of Baldwin City, Jim Wolken and Kelli of Greeley; thirteen grandchildren, Brett, Trevor, and Jenna Campbell, Eric Bertels and Beth Hughes, Seth and Tyler Wolken, Grace Mader, Wesley, Bailey, Briley, Gavin, and Teagan Wolken; nine great-grandchildren; two sisters, Sr. Rosina Van Leeuwen of Wichita, Kansas and Judy Fager of Erie, Kansas.
A mass of Christian burial will be held for Jeanette at 10:30 AM, Tuesday, October 13, 2020 at St. John’s Catholic Church, Greeley. Burial will follow in the St. John’s Cemetery. The family will greet friends following a 6:30 PM Rosary at the church on Monday evening.
