Jimmy Dale O'Brien, Sr., age 93, of Iola, Kansas, passed away December 20, 2022, at the Allen County Regional Hospital, Iola, Kansas. Jimmy was born June 18, 1929, in Independence, Kansas, to Paul O'Brien and Lois (Johnson) O'Brien.
Jimmy and Patricia Krueger were married February 7, 1958, in McComb, Mississippi.
Jimmy worked as a tree trimmer for many years in Louisiana and Kansas. He then went to work as a machinist, making printing press parts at Didde Glaser in Emporia, Kansas, retiring after 16 years. After retirement, he went to work for JC Penney and Kohl's as a maintenance technician until he was 88 years old.
Jimmy was a member of the Lions Club and served as Kansas District Governor for the Lions in 1987. He and Patricia hosted foreign exchange students through the Lions Club.
Jimmy enjoyed gardening and was a master gardener. He grew the first pineapple in Kansas. He liked to fish and spend time outdoors. Jimmy enjoyed playing cards and dice games.
Jimmy was preceded in death by his parents; son, Frederick Paul O'Brien; four brothers; two sisters; one step-brother; and two step-sisters.
Jimmy is survived by his wife, Patricia, of the home; daughter, Kathy O'Brien, Columbus, Kansas; son, Jimmy (Rhonda) O'Brien, Jr., Iola, Kansas; eight grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; brother, Larry (Florence) O'Brien; sister, Sharlyon DeMott; and numerous other relatives and friends.
A funeral service to honor Jimmy's life will be at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, December 23, 2022, in the chapel at Feuerborn Family Funeral Service, 1883 US Highway 54, Iola, Kansas. Interment will follow in Maplewood Cemetery, 2000 Prairie Street, Emporia, Kansas.
